Letting God be God – Part 1
Have you ever hear the saying “Let Go and Let God?” In other words, “Let God be God.” Too many of us are bent on keeping control of key elements in our lives – attempting to establish or create a sound future. But the thing we need to keep in our minds is that God is GOD! He took nothing and made the universe (Genesis 1). He is GOD ALMIGHTY! He created humans out of the dust of the earth (Genesis 2:7). He has always been GOD and He always will be GOD. What’s more, He never changes (Malachi 3:6, James 1:17).
God made an iron axe head float on water (2 Kings 6:6). He caused the Red Sea to part (Exodus 14:21). God caused the sun to move in the sky or made the earth to rotate 10 degrees one way and then back again (2 Kings 20:9-11). God caused the daylight to remain an extra day (Joshua 10:13). He turned five loaves of bread and two fish into the meal that fed over 5,000 people, with food left over (Matthew 14:19-21). God has raised numerous people from the dead (2 Kings 4:34-35, Matthew 9:18-25, John 11:41-44, Acts 20:9-10).
These are just a few examples of things that God has done that, if witnessed today, would be deemed miracles. Now, we all have a choice to make. Do we believe that God actually did these things or not? If we do, do we act like we believe – and are we letting God be God? If you believe that those things really happened, you need to make a firm stand. However, if you have doubts, then you need to get on a ‘one-to-one’ with God and ask Him to prove Himself to you. It’s up to you!!!
If you choose to believe some things from the Bible and not others then you are limiting God and your entire relationship with Him will be compromised. But as I am addressing the Cornerstone congregation, from this point on I’m going to treat you as believers who have it firmly implanted in their minds that God actually did make time stand still, make a non-floatable item defy gravity, and that He did perform the other physics-defying things mentioned earlier.
Now, this doesn't necessarily mean that you must understand how these miracles happened. You just need to believe that they did happen. It isn't our job to understand the “hows” of the matters of an “all-powerful” God. That’s His concern. We just need to keep an open mind to the fact that He does do things that don't fit into what we perceive to be the laws of physics, and He does things that seem impossible to human reasoning.
Here are a couple of scriptures that might help you to deal with your own perceptions and any negative opinions that may hinder your faith in this area.
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart; and lean not on your own understanding." (Proverbs 3:5)
"For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways, says the Lord." (Isaiah 55:8)
Now, let's refresh our memories with something I mentioned in the first paragraph. God never changes. Let’s examine a few scriptures:
"For I am the Lord, I do not change; therefore you sons of Jacob are not consumed." (Malachi 3:6)
"Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variableness, neither shadow of turning." (James 1:17)
“Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and for ever.” (Hebrews 13:8)
You have to empty your mind of any hindrances that will prevent you from accepting the fact that God can and will do the impossible today. He is not any different to what He was in Bible times. He is not withholding Himself from any of you. God requires firstly that you believe Him and then He wants you to let Him be God. In Genesis 17:7 the Lord declares that He wants to be ‘your God’. Do you remember the examples of miracles mentioned earlier? If you do, you would have noticed that, in each one, there was somebody there that “believed” a miracle would take place, and then expected it to happen. What are your expectations drawn to?
Unbelief can prevent you from experiencing the things that God wants you to. Take a look at what the Bible says about unbelief. Then the disciples came to Jesus in private and asked, "Why couldn't we drive it out?" So Jesus said to them, “Because of your unbelief; for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you." (Matthew 17:19-20) And in the negative. “Now He did not do many mighty works there because of their unbelief.” (Matthew 13:58)
Most of us have some understanding of the laws of gravity. We have it firmly implanted in our minds that gravity will cause everything to fall to the earth – unless the object has sufficient force to hurl it away from the earth. Hence, unless the object could be propelled out of the earth's gravitational pull, it will eventually fall back to the earth. We have been taught that there are no exceptions to that rule of gravity.
Do you know? The laws of gravity do not rule God! God made gravity, yet He is not bound by its influence! As the creator of gravity, if He chooses, God can make an axe head float on the surface of water. We all know from experience that if we put a heavy steel object in water it will sink every time. It is imperative that we view the "laws" of physics, the "laws" of gravity, and the other "laws" we have learned from life experiences in a whole different light. We need to open our minds to allow God to work. We need to be sensitive to the still, small voice that is God's (1 Kings 19:12). If His voice tells us that we need to “say” something to make an axe head float, then we had better believe it will float as we “say it” - or it just won't float.
In the last scripture in Matthew Jesus said, "If you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, you shall say to this mountain, Move from here to there; and it will move; and nothing shall be impossible to you." Based on everything we've covered so far let's take this statement as being absolute truth – 100%, without a doubt, complete truth! If God created the world, including the mountains, can He move one of the mountains if He chooses? Yes, off cause He can! Since, in all our experiences and in everything we've ever been taught, we've never heard of a mountain moving from one place to another, we tend to set our minds firmly of the belief that mountains are solid, immovable objects. Many use this scripture (about moving a mountain) as an ‘exaggeration’ to help them to acquire enough faith for smaller miracles. But Jesus was stating an absolute fact, He was not speaking metaphorically.
Now, lets do a little examination that might help our limited human perception comprehend the miraculous things of God. Is a mountain a solid object? Are there any solid objects in the earth? The answer is no. Everything is made up of atoms. I repeat, everything is made up of atoms. Everything on earth, including the ground and the air, is made up of the exact same substance... atoms. Have you ever seen the TV series or the movie Star Trek? They had a transporter that disassembled the atoms of a person, transported the atoms through space, and reassembled that person at a different destination. That might help you picture things as not being solid. Keeping that in mind let's picture a person walking toward a brick wall. Remembering that both the person and the wall are entirely made up of atoms. What if God lined up all the atoms in the person and in the wall in such a way that the person could pass right through the wall? What do you think??
Now, going back to that mountain Jesus mentioned, how hard would it be for God to disassemble the atoms of the mountain, reconfiguring those atoms to become air or even clouds, and reassembling them back into a mountain somewhere else? If science fiction can accept this, how come we can’t? As a true believer, maybe you should not look at mountains the same any more. Maybe you should not look at anything the same any more! What about the mountains in your life?
On a smaller scale, how difficult is it for God to take rogue cancer cells and reconstructs them again as regular body cells? Perhaps God caused the axe head's atoms to move farther apart to cause it to float. That's just a guess, but that might be what happened. Let's stop looking at things in the same old way. Let's allow God to control what we believe to be fact. When you read your Bible observe the awesome things that God has done. But also be on the lookout for those things He still wants to do. Find out more about His ways. Get to know more about His heart and His desires. Keep chasing Him down! Get closer to Him. Seek His face. Pray that your heart is in harmony with the things that are important to Him.
But as it is written: “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man, the things which God has prepared for those who love Him.” But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God. These things we also speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual. But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.” (1 Corinthians 2:9-14)
Should we simply accept the fact that humans have no control over the weather? Yet, Jesus controlled the wind! And later on He said, "Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father" (John 14:12). Mankind was told to subdue the earth (Genesis 1:28). And who knows? Maybe God wants one of you to command the rain to fall – or to stop it falling. It could be your personal assignment. Ask Him... Note, what He commands He will deliver on! That is an absolute certainty.
What exactly does God want to be doing through you? What mountains does He want moved? What principalities and powers does He want removed? What miracles does He want to perform? Do you ever pray the Lord's prayer? Do you say the part, "Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven?" You're telling Him that you want His will done here on earth, but are you prepared to be a vessel that will allow His will to be done through you?
You must let God (by His Spirit) teach you what to believe and what to expect. We have learned almost everything we know from people and from our own life's experiences. When you were in school you probably accepted every word that came out of your teachers' mouths (and out of your textbooks) as being factual. To let God be God, you have to discard many of the things you learned and relearn them in a new way, a spiritual way. So let the Holy Spirit teach you all things.
"But the anointing which you have received from Him abides in you, and you do not need that anyone teach you; but as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you will abide in Him." (1 John 2:27)
Get closer to Him. Learn to hear His voice. Always expect Him to do the unexpected. Don't look at everything in the same old way. Start looking at things through God's eyes. Don't accept anything as fact unless God’s Word verifies it. He can use you if you are willing to be used. But it starts with this... You must… LET GO AND LET GOD! Yes, you must always... LET GOD BE GOD! If you are anxious, tense, or concerned about anything in your life, begin right now to let go and let God fill your need.
Accept the reality that God’s awesome wisdom is ever present and available, ready to impart to you new understanding. Let God fill every void – every emptiness that seems to separate you from the desires of your heart. Right now, let go! Then let God fill your every need. God always provides knowledge, understanding, guidance, faith, healing, support or whatever else is needed in your life. Whatever your situation, at this moment, there is an opportunity to let go of personal striving and let God move in you (and through you) to fill every need. God’s love will always fill every need in every circumstance, every hunger of your heart, every longing of your soul for peace and assurance. Even though it may seem that you are separated from that which has been your greatest avenue of comfort, security or supply, remember – God always fills your need. So just let go and let God!
No matter how great the gulf seems between you and the solution to your deepest anxieties, you can trust in Him. Tell yourself again and again: “I have let go... God has filled my every need.”
God never leaves a void. He will never desert you or forsake you; you are His own precious child. God’s love and wisdom is forever nurturing you toward the gradual development of your spiritual potential. God’s mighty power is constantly at work within every negative circumstance. As you let go and trust Him, everything is transformed – yes, everything – and your life is flooded with blessings. God always makes dark places light, rough places smooth, crooked places straight and empty places full. Full to overflowing! Full of His loving kindness and abundance of joy.
So let go and let God! Let God fill your need. Let the creative process and miraculous ability of God begin to permeate into every aspect of your life. Right now, bring Him all those things that require a miracle – that require supernatural intervention. God is ready to do what you cannot do by yourself.
Take a step back and let God be God!
