The fire of Unity

There is power in unity - in togetherness. When believers come together ‘in agreement’ something awesome happens in the spirit realm. Leviticus 26:8 declares, “Five of you shall chase a hundred and one hundred of you shall put ten thousand to flight.” The greater the number of people that come together in the Lord’s name, the greater God’s power is displayed in the spirit realm.  According to this scripture, one hundred people standing in agreement can provide a hundred times more power - now that’s worth aiming for!

Ecclesiastes 4:12 says, “Though one may be overpowered, two can withstand, and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.”  Whether you like it or not, you need each other! Jesus Himself said, “Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and every city or house divided against itself will not stand” [Matthew 12:25].  Together we stand, divided we fall!

Psalm 133 states, “Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for the fellow workers to dwell together in unity! ....For there the Lord commands the blessing.”  Where God’s people are in unity, there you will find His unlimited resources.  The church is a unity in diversity; a fellowship of faith, hope and love that binds believers together.  It is a disciplined body, with individual parts working together in harmony to the glory of God. And it is the responsibility of the fivefold ministry to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, until we come to the unity of the faith [Ephesians 4:12,13].

The word of God tells us that two can’t walk together except they be in agreement [Amos 3:3]. In fact, you cannot challenge this law.  If you plan to reach a specific destination in life; with a loved one, partner, work-mate or friend, you must be in agreement.

No goal can be reached unless all those involved are in agreement.  There’s something we ought to understand here - you cannot push your desires off on somebody else. Each person has a will of his own. You may sincerely desire good things for others but often they have to make a quality decision to come into agreement with what you desire for them.  Hearts need to be joined and in harmony - ablaze with unity!

Turn with me now to Matthew 18 and let us read verses 18,19, 20. This principle is referred to as “The Key of David.” Whatever door this key opens, no man can shut. And whatever door this key shuts no man can open.

The negative of verse 19 reads, “If two of you do not agree on earth concerning anything that they ask, it cannot be done for them by My Father in heaven.”  Notice, it takes just one other person to ensure success, but it also takes just one other person to bring about failure.  Two believers, standing together in faith and unity, have the power to bind on earth what is bound in heaven and loose on earth what is loosed in heaven. Binding and loosing have to do with forbidding and permitting.  It only takes two people in agreement to exercise authority on earth  for God’s awesome power and unlimited provision to be unleashed. What a privilege this is!  But also, what a responsibility you have to keep the faith and be in unity!

The Greek word for “agreement” denotes a togetherness of sound, primarily of musical instruments.  When you are in agreement with someone else your heart resonates with theirs making a perfect musical sound. Isn’t this a lovely image? Hearts harmonising together, producing a beautiful melody for God to enjoy.  In this context, togetherness is a form of praise.  It is music to God’s ears!

If you can get someone to agree with you, in line with God’s infallible word, great things will happen [and praise will abound toward God]. Also, always remember and value the importance of friendships and associations. There are pleasures and benefits from friendships and socialising, that are incomprehensible to anyone who chooses to live in isolation.
