Desperate for God
Psalms 84:2 – “My soul yearns, yes, even pines and is desperate for (can’t do without) the courts of the Lord; my heart and my flesh cry out and sing for joy to the living God.” Part of the deficit in many people’s lives is that they are not desperate for God. They are self-satisfied and content with their lives as things are. They are content with our mediocrity. Jesus’ desire for His disciples was that they would come to terms with the spiritual fact that, “Without Me you can do nothing.” It is the story of the vine and the branches.
The problem often is, just beneath the surface, people really think they can do something significant, worthwhile, and of eternal value without God. They learn to be strong, clever, gifted. And rely on their own arm to rescue themselves. Many can, and do, get along pretty much without Him. If He does not answer prayer, that’s OK – they will find another way. They become self-sufficient and think, “I can do it without God,” perhaps believing all the while, “Won’t God be proud of me when I get this done.”
The parable of the vine and branches clearly illustrates that… “Without God you can do nothing.” Branches don’t live apart from the vine! Vines don’t grow all by themselves! Branches grow by clinging tenaciously to the vine. Vines grow with their roots desperately clinging to the soil. You, as a Christian, cannot survive apart from the vine – Jesus Christ. |
